Welsh belongs to the Indo-European family, Celtic group, Brythonic subgroup, and has over 500,000 speakers, most of whom are bilingual in English. Its use is being encouraged in schools. Welsh is the most flourishing of the Celtic languages. As all other Celtic languages (e.g. Cornish, Breton, Irish), a characteristic distinguishing it from other Indo-European linguistic groups is the loss of the original Indo-European sound "p". Its rules of pronunciation are extremely complicated, as the spelling generally does not correspond to the pronunciation. Celtic tribes entered Britain sometime after the 5th century B.C. The Anglo-Saxon invasions many centuries later drove the Welsh into the west, where they retained their Celtic speech and remained a distinctive people. The Welsh call their country Cymru and their language Cymraeg.
