Welsh Feminine

Learning the Welsh Feminine displayed below is vital to the language. Welsh feminine refers to female qualities attributed specifically to women and girls or things considered feminine. The complement to feminine is masculine.

Grammar Tips:

To form a feminine word from the masculine in Welsh, you simply add (-es) or (-wraig). If the masculine word ends in ‘-wr’ you simply use ‘-wraig’ instead of ‘-wr’. For example ‘dawnsiwr’ (dancer) becomes ‘dawnswraig’. In most other cases you add ‘-es’ to the masculine version. For example ‘ysgrifennydd’ (secretary) becomes ‘ysgrifenyddes’. Other masculine words have completely different feminine forms. For example ‘mab’ (son) becomes ‘merch’ (daughter).
