Welsh Questions

Learning the Welsh Questions displayed below is vital to the language. Welsh questions may be either a linguistic expression used to make a request for information, or else the request itself made by such an expression. Usually it starts with why, how, where, when.

Grammar Tips:

In Welsh there are 2 ways of asking a question to get a yes or no answer, and they are the following:

Questions without the definite article: Unlike English, the auxiliaries do and does are not used. Oes amser rydd gyda hi? (Does she have free time?). Please note that this is an idiom. Literally, the qustion asks: ‘Is there free time with her?’ The answer would be ‘Oes’ (yes) or ‘Nac oes’ (no).

Questions with the definite article: Ydy’r ferch yn chwarae? (Is the girl playing?). The answer would be ‘Ydy’ (yes) or ‘Nac ydy’ (no).

Please note that in Welsh questions starting with a verb-form must have answers which correspond in person. It would take several lessons to go through it all.
