Learning the Welsh Negation displayed below is vital to the language. Welsh negation is the process that turns an affirmative statement (I am happy) into its opposite denial (I am not happy).
In Welsh, negation is rather complex at first sight. For example, in the Present Tense long form, ‘Rydw i’n mynd’ (I’m going) changes to ‘Dydw i ddim yn mynd’ (I’m not going). ‘Mae hi’n mynd’ (she’s going) changes to ‘Dydy hi ddim yn mynd’ (she’s not going). With the short form the first letter of the verb mutates (if it’s c,p,t,g,b,d,ll,m, or rh) and ‘ddim’ is added.For example: ‘Alla i ddim gwneud hyn’ (I can’t do this) where the original ‘G’ at the start of ‘Alla’ has been lost. The common element in all negation is the appearance of ‘ddim’ – this is essential in all cases except liteary or advanced work.
