Serbian belongs to the Indo-European family, Slavonic group, South Slavonic subgroup, and is spoken by over 7 million people (5 million in Serbia proper). An essential contribution to present-day Serbian was made by philologist and language reformer Vuk Stefanovich Karadzich. He produced a grammar of Serbian in 1815 and a Serbian dictionary three years later. In these works he reduced the complex Slavo-Serbian alphabet from 40 to 30 characters, making it completely phonetic. In other words he followed the rule: write as you speak, and read as you write. Serbian written in Cyrillic is the official language.
