Slovak Plural

Learning the Slovak Plural displayed below is vital to the language. Slovak Plurals are grammatical numbers, typically referring to more than one of the referent in the real world. In the English language, singular and plural are the only grammatical numbers.

Grammar Tips:

While in English, the plural is formed by adding (s) to the singular. In Slovak, to form the plural of nouns we add (-i to masculine words referring to a living things ending in a consonant and (-e or -y) to masculine non living words ending in a consonant. To feminine words ending in a vowel we add (-y or –e) and feminine words ending in consonant we add (-i ).

Neutral nouns ending in –e we add (-á) and ending in –e we add (-ia)

Here are some examples:

Muž (a man) becomes: Muži (some men) – Living masculine noun.

Dom (one house) becomes: Domy  (some houses) - Non living masculine noun.

Nôž (one knife) becomes: Nože (some knives)

Kniha (one book) becomes: Knihy (some books).- Feminine noun ending in –a after ‘a hard consonant’.

Skriňa (one cupboard) becomes: Skrine (some cupboards). -Feminine noun ending in –a after ‘a soft consonant’.

Kosť (one bone) becomes: Kosti ( some bones).

Okno (one window) becomes: Okná (some windows). - Neutral noun ending in –o.

Vajce (one egg) becomes: Vajcia (some eggs).  – Neutral noun ending in –e.
