Russian Feminine

Learning the Russian Feminine is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you master it the more you get closer to mastering the Russian language. But first we need to know what the role of Feminine is in the structure of the grammar in Russian.

Russian feminine refers to female qualities attributed specifically to women and girls or things considered feminine. The complement to feminine is masculine.

Grammar Tips:

Nouns can be of masculine, feminine or neutral gender. With people, the reason for this is self-explanatory:

мужчинаman (masc.),

женщина woman (fem.).

отец – father (masc.)

матьmother (fem.)

cын – son (masc.)

дочь – daughter (fem.)

With inanimate objects, a lot of the times there is no obvious reason why a word is of masculine or feminine gender:

Тарелка – plate (fem.)

Стакан – glass (masc.)

Окно – window (neutral)

Sometimes you can form a feminine word from a masculine. Usually the suffix «-ка» is used; if the word ends with the suffix «ник», it is replaced with «-ница»:

Начальник (boss masc.) – начальница (boss fem.)

Проводник (conductor masc.) – проводница (conductor fem.)

Пенсионер (pensioner masc.) – пенсионерка (pensioner fem.)

Adjectives change their ending depending on the gender of the word they are used to describe:

Хороший сын (good son)

Многодетная мать (mother of a big family)

Verbs in the past tense are also changed (conjugated) depending on the gender of the subject of the sentence:

Девочка пошла гулять с собакой – A girl went to walk the dog

Мальчик пошел гулять с собакой – A boy went to walk the dog
