Malagasy Articles

Learning the Malagasy Articles is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you master it the more you get closer to mastering the Malagasy language. But first we need to know what the role of Articles is in the structure of the grammar in Malagasy.

Malagasy articles are words that combine with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made by the noun. Generally articles specify the grammatical definiteness of the noun. Examples are "the, a, and an".

Grammar Tips:

Definite Article:

Like English, which has only one definite article “the", Malagasy also has only one definite article: “Ny”. However two particles are used for persons or proper nouns: “i”, attached or not attached to the definite name, and “ra”, more polite than “i” which is mostly found as a first syllable of many Malagasy last names.

Examples of common names: Ny hazo (the tree), Ny hazo (the trees); Ny trano (the house), Ny trano (the houses)

Examples of proper names: i Koto or Ikoto (the boy named Koto); i Soa or Isoa (the girl named Soa); Rakoto (with politeness: the man named Koto and most of times a last name)

Indefinite Article:

While we have (a / an / some) in English as indefinite articles, there is no indefinite article in Malagasy .

Examples:

Boky (a book)

Trano (a house)
