Latvian Feminine

Learning the Latvian Feminine displayed below is vital to the language. Latvian feminine refers to female qualities attributed specifically to women and girls or things considered feminine. The complement to feminine is masculine.

Grammar Tips:

In Latvian all nouns are either masculine or feminine. For example: vīrietis (man), sieviete (woman), māsa (sister), brālis (brother).

Some masculine words (usually professions) can be changed into feminine, simply by removing the masculine ending (– s) and adding a vowel (-a or –e). For example:

Students (student masc.) becomes studente (student fem.), ārsts (doctor masc.) becomes ārste (doctor fem), skolotājs (teacher masc.) becomes skolotāja (teacher fem.)
