Icelandic Pronouns

Learning the Icelandic Pronouns displayed below is vital to the language. Icelandic pronouns include personal pronouns (refer to the persons speaking, the persons spoken to, or the persons or things spoken about), indefinite pronouns, relative pronouns (connect parts of sentences) and reciprocal or reflexive pronouns (in which the object of a verb is being acted on by verb's subject).

Grammar Tips:

The personal pronouns are:

Singular:

Nom:   Ég       I           þú        you

Acc:    mig      me       þig       you

Dat:     mér     me       þér       you

Gen:    mín      me       þín       you

Plural:

Nom:   við       we       þið       you

Acc:    okkur   us        ykkur   you

Dat:     okkur   us        ykkur   you

Gen:    okkar   us        ykkar   you

Singular:

Nom:   hann                he                    hún                  you      það      it

Acc:    hann                him                  hana                you      það      it

Dat:     honum            him                  henni               you      því       it

Gen:    hans                him                  hennar            you      þess    it

Plural:

Nom:   þeir                  they                 þær                 they     þau      they

Acc:    þá                    them               þær                 them    þau      them

Dat:     þeim                them               þeim                them    þeim    them

Gen:    þeirra              them               þeirra              them    þeirra   them

Note that the dative and genitive plurals are identical

The possessives are:

minn - mín - mitt (my/mine masc., fem., neut.)

þinn - þín - þitt (your...)

These also decline in all four cases and both numbers.

For the third person (his, her and its) we use the personal prounoun in the genitive (hans, hennar, þess).

The demonstrative pronoun is þessi (masc. and fem.) and þetta (neut.).

Þessi maður (this man), þessi kona (this woman), þetta barn (this child).
