Georgian Questions

Learning the Georgian Questions is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you master it the more you get closer to mastering the Georgian language. But first we need to know what the role of Questions is in the structure of the grammar in Georgian.

Georgian questions may be either a linguistic expression used to make a request for information, or else the request itself made by such an expression. Usually it starts with why, how, where, when.

Grammar Tips:

In Georgian the questions are formatted through intonation in order to get a Yes No answer.

-       You take the affirmative sentence and pronounce it with corresponding intonation and put question mark at the end, which indicates the interrogative sentence.

Example: es wigni ninosia. – es wigni ninosia?

Unlike English, the auxiliaries do and does are not used.

Another option for forming a WH question – or the General quest is using the question words,

ra (what)? ramdeni (how much)? romeli (which)? Vin (who)? visi (whose)? risa (which)? Which stands at the beginning of the sentence.

-Question word +Verb + the other parts of the sentence

The question mark stands at the beginning of the sentence while the rest of the sentence remains as in the affirmative.

- ra Rirs es wigni? (how much is this book?)

- visia es wigni? (whose book is this?)

-Finally you can also make a question by adding a tag question to the end of a statement –you take the sentence in affirmative, and put the -ara? Or the phrase – gana ase ar aris? at the end.

- es wigni ninosia, ara? (This book is Nino’s, isn’t it).

- es wigni ninosia, gana ase ar aris? (This book is Nino’s, isn’t it).
