Learning the Galician Plural displayed below is vital to the language. Galician Plurals are grammatical numbers, typically referring to more than one of the referent in the real world. In the English language, singular and plural are the only grammatical numbers.
While in English, the plural is formed by adding (s) to the singular. In Galician, to form the plural of nouns and adjectives we add (-s) to words ending in a vowel and (-es) to words ending in a consonant (this is the general rule, there are some exceptions). Here are some examples:
Un amigo (a friend) becomes: Uns amigos (some friends)
Unha muller (one woman) becomes: Unhas mulleres (some women)
Ese é o meu coche vermello (this is my red car) becomes: Eses son os meus coches vermellos (these are my red cars).
Exceptions:
1. When the singular noun or adjective ends in –s, the plural remains the same: Un lapis (a pencil) – Uns lapis (some pencils).
2. When the singular form ends in –al, the plural will be –ais: un sinal (a sign) – uns sinais (some signs). However, this rule changes when the noun is monnosyllabic. In this case, the plural is formed by adding –es: sal (salt) – sales ("salts").
