Esperanto Articles

Learning the Esperanto Articles displayed below is vital to the language. Esperanto articles are words that combine with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made by the noun. Generally articles specify the grammatical definiteness of the noun. Examples are "the, a, and an".

Grammar Tips:

Definite Article:

As in English, which has only one definite article: “the,” Esperanto has one definite article: “la.”

La libro (the book)

La domo (the house)

La domoj (the houses)

Indefinite Article:

While we have (a / an/ some) in English as indefinite articles, we do not have indefinite articles in Esperanto. We infer the presence of the indefinite, but do not express it. It is deduced from context.

Whenever an indefinite article is used in English, you use the noun alone to make the equivalent meaning in Esperanto.

Mi vidas libron. (I see a book)

Ili konstruis domojn (They built houses or They built some houses)

Li verkis librojn (He wrote some books)
