Esperanto Adverbs

Learning the Esperanto Adverbs displayed below is vital to the language. Esperanto adverbs are part of speech. Generally they're words that modify any part of language other than a noun. Adverbs can modify verbs, adjectives (including numbers), clauses, sentences and other adverbs.

Grammar Tips:

While in English adverbs are usually formed by adding (-ly) to adjectives, in Esperanto all adverbs are formed from the stem or root, simply by adding the suffix -e to the root. Examples:

Malrapida (slow) becomes malrapide (slowly)

[In this case, “rapid-“ (fast) is the stem or root. The prefix “mal-“ is added to indicate the opposite meaning of “fast.” The suffix “-a” indicates the presence of the adjective.]

Perfekta (perfect) becomes perfekte (perfectly)

Bela (beautiful) becomes bele (beautifully)

However, that’s not always the case. Some words are adverbs by nature. For example:

Nun (now) and baldaŭ (soon) are Esperanto adverbs.

Esperanto is an adverb-rich language. This may be because adverbs are so easy to make by simply adding –e. In English, there are many ways of modifying verbs, such as by adding “-wise.” Some adverbs in English are difficult to pronounce, such as “friendlily” (in a friendly way) and are therefore seldom used in speech. In Esperanto, one would simply add –e to amik- to get amike.

In Esperanto, as in English, some nouns may be used adverbially, for example “hieraŭ” (yesterday) or “morgaŭ” (tomorrow).

In Esperanto, as in English, adverbs may modify verbs, adjectives, or other adverbs.
