Czech Questions

Learning the Czech Questions displayed below is vital to the language. Czech questions may be either a linguistic expression used to make a request for information, or else the request itself made by such an expression. Usually it starts with why, how, where, when ... etc.

Grammar Tips:

In Czech there are 4 ways of asking a question to get a yes or no answer, and they are the following:

-Verb + pronoun: Unlike English, the auxiliaries do and does are not used. Only the intonation makes the sentence interrogative: Máš čas? (Do you have free time?)

-Pronoun + verb: Peníze máš? (Do you have money?) This represents, however, rather informal, colloquial  Czech.

-Verb +...+ pronoun. The pronoun goes last.  Máš v pondělí čas? (Do you have free time on Monday?)

-Finally you can also make a question by adding a tag question to the end of a statement. Máš čas, že? (You have time, don’t you).

In spoken Czech, word order is of little importance as grammatical function is expressed by affixes/endings. Theoretically, words in a sentence can be mixed in any order without affecting meaning and grammatical correctness. In fact, there are some unspoken rules and some combinations might sound clumsy, but it is rather a style issue.
