Czech Adjectives

Learning the Czech Adjectives displayed below is vital to the language. Czech Adjectives are words that describe or modify another person or thing in the sentence. All nouns in Czech language are either masculine or feminine. You have to choose the proper form of the adjective depending on the word, that you are describing or talking about. The masculine form usually ends with the letter Y and the feminine form with the letter A.

Grammar Tips:

While in English an adjective doesn’t change when the noun changes, in Czech an adjective (the “mladý” type) should agree in gender and number with the noun. For example:

a)    Masculine to feminine example:

To je můj malý syn (this is my little son) becomes: To je moje malá dcera (this is my little daughter)

As you can see from the example above, the adjective (congrual adjunct) comes before the noun and also takes the feminine form.

b)    Singular to plural example:

To je moje bílá kočka (this is my white cat) becomes: To jsou mé bílé kočky (these are my white cats).

As you can see from the example above, the adjective (congrual adjunct) comes before the noun and also takes the plural form.

Affix of the “jarní” type adjective is not affected by gender or number. It also comes before the noun.

To je můj zimní kabát (this is my winter coat), To jsou mé zimní kabáty (these are my winter coats)
