Learning the Catalan Plural displayed below is vital to the language. Catalan Plurals are grammatical numbers, typically referring to more than one of the referent in the real world. In the English language, singular and plural are the only grammatical numbers.
In English, the plural is formed by adding (s) to the singular. In Catalan, even though plurals also end in (s), there are a few simple rules to follow:
In most cases, we form the plural by simply adding (-s) to the singular form.
E.g.: Un arbre (tree) becomes: Uns arbres (some trees).
Un amic (a friend) becomes: Uns amics (some friends).
Words ending in an unstressed –a in the singular form the plural by changing this –a into an –e and adding –s. Sometimes, this requires changing the orthography of the word (ç becomes c, c becomes qu, qu becomes qü, j becomes g, g becomes gu, etc.)
E.g.: Una amiga (a female friend) becomes: Unes amigues (some female friends).
Una balança (a scale) becomes: Unes balances.
Una llengua (a language) becomes: Unes llengües.
Most words ending in a stressed vowel form the plural by adding (-ns).
E.g.: Un be (a lamb) becomes: Uns bens (some lambs).
Un coixí (a pillow) becomes: Uns coixins (some pillows).
Finally, words ending in –s form the plural by adding -os or –sos. E.g.:
Un gos (a dog) becomes: Uns gossos (some dogs).
Un cas (a case) becomes: Uns casos (some cases).
