Learning the Armenian Articles is very important because its structure is used in every day conversation. The more you master it the more you get closer to mastering the Armenian language. But first we need to know what the role of Articles is in the structure of the grammar in Armenian.
Armenian articles are words that combine with a noun to indicate the type of reference being made by the noun. Generally articles specify the grammatical definiteness of the noun. Examples are "the, a, and an".
Definite Article:
Like English, Armenian too has one definite article “the" – “ը (ն)”. We generally use “ն”, when the word ends in a vowel, or the following verb begins with a vowel.
ը (singular), գիրքը (the book), գրքերը (the books)
ն (singular), տղան (the boy)
Տղան ընկավ (The boy fell down.)
Indefinite Article:
While we have (a / an / some) in English as indefinite articles, we have 0(no article)/ մի/որոշ/ինչ-որ in Armenian .
In general, whenever (a, an) are used in English, you need to use no article or մի/որոշ/ ինչ-որ to say the equivalent in Armenian.
no article (singular), գիրք (a book)
a/an (singular) մի/ինչ-որ տուն (a house)
no article (plural) գրքեր (some books)
որոշ (plural) որոշ տներ (some houses)
Example: Իմ ունեցած գրքերը իմ մի ընկերոջ տանն են: (The books I have are in a house of a friend)
